The City Hall of Prague 10 plans to demolish the empty Eden Cultural Center and build a house with flats, a social hall and a community center in its place. The spokesman of the city district, according to Jan Hamrník. The design is based on an architectural competition that the town hall announced for the solution of the dilapidated building and its surroundings. The proposal also envisages modifications to public spaces, including the adjacent Vršovická Street.
The former Eden House of Culture from 1980 has been unused for almost 20 years and is statically in poor condition. Representatives of the town hall previously stated that its reconstruction would be financially and technically problematic. According to the winning design, the new house with city rental flats is to stand directly on the site of the current center, a square to the east of the building and a smaller park to the south.
According to the information provided by the town hall, the modifications will also concern Vršovická Street, where the town hall expects to narrow down traffic lanes and plant tree lines next to the grass tram line. “This is an urban concept with a clearly defined public space, I see a great connection to the existing structure of the housing estate,” said the Deputy Mayor of Prague 10 Martin Valovič (ODS).
Sixteen entries entered the competition, and six competitors advanced to the second round, in which the participants worked out their intentions. Now the town hall will discuss with the authors the final form of the adjustments, and will also consider the ideas of the teams that placed in other places.
The management of Prague 10 is also preparing the reconstruction of the adjacent town hall building, which is estimated at 1.1 billion crowns. The city district wants to cover the costs for the most part with a subsidy from the Ministry of the Environment and a half-billion interest-free loan from the Prague City Hall. It is not yet clear when the work will begin, the town hall management originally wanted to start it last year, but preparations have been delayed. Opposition TOP 09 and YES criticize the leadership of Prague 10 for the delays, according to which they will lead to significant price increases.
