Prague 7 plans a referendum on its future headquarters

29 November 2012

Prague 7 plans to organize a referendum on its future headquarters. The original plan to buy Argentinská hvězda, an office project developed by PPF in Argentinská street, has triggered controversy because of its price CZK 1.6bn. The opponents demanded that a public tender is launched and insisted the new city hall should not cost more than CZK 0.5bn. The price is seen by some as realistic, as the Prague 7 municipality received several offers since then which meet this criteria. The lowest bid came from Economia publishing which is relocating to Karlín and has offered to sell its current headquarters in Prague 7 for CZK 345m (though its suitability for Prague 7 is questionable). The court set the referendum to take place on the same day in January as the first direct elections of the Czech president, in which voters will decide upon the successor to Vaclav Klaus.
