Prague’s transport company DPP will hold a tender to choose multifrequency transponders capable of receiving signals from the Galileo GPS system for all of 838 of its trams. Its current GPS equipment, which is 20 years old, will be replaced with a system with an accuracy of 3.5 meters that will be able to provide commuters with real-time information about the tram’s location. DPP is working with the Prague technical university (ČVUT), the Ministry of Transportation and the City of Prague. The expected price of installing the system is around CZK 20m, with the tender set to be announced at the end of the summer holidays. The decision is in line with efforts by cities around Europe to offer “smart” services to their residents in ways that improve quality of life and transparency.
