Proposed Metropolitan plan would allow new highrises in Prague

17 June 2016

Prague’s Institute for planning and development IPR published the new Metropolitan plan for the city. The immediately has stirred up a wave of criticism from the Regional Ministry and from local activities, who argue that the plan gives too much advantage to the stronger developers in the city. The Metropolitan plan is supposed to replace the existing master plan in 2020, but will still have to make it through a complicated approval process. The new key planning document would open the way for the redevelopment of huge brownfield areas in the city, such as Smíchov railway station, Žižkov cargo station, Nová Ruzyně and Bubny. It also includes new bridges connecting Smíchov to Podolí, Zlíchov to Dvorce and Vršovice to the Bohdalec. Under the plan, new areas would become available for the construction of highrise buildings, including Chodov, Opatov and Holešovice.
