The R49 express road that would extend from the D1 motorway from south of Olomouc across the border to the Slovak D1 motorway is being delayed by environmental activists, according to Czech Television. In a broadcast Monday evening, it reported that planning documentation is being changed for resubmission, with special attention being paid to the intersection with the D1 at Hulín. Additional pressure for the construction of the high capacity road comes from the fact that European Union money could be lost if work doesn’t begin soon.
A new industrial zone at Holešov is to be connected to the R49, whose construction has become a matter of the highest political importance. The Czech prime minister himself became involved last April, hinting that construction work might begin by the end of 2014. Now it appears that planning could have to wait until July before moving ahead to new approval proceedings.
