Rail connection to Prague airport to break ground in 2018

17 July 2015

The Czech Ministry of Transportation outlined plans for a CZK 19.46bn rail connection between the the Prague city center and the Václav Havel Airport.
Trains will leave from the Masarykovo nádraží station in Prague 1 and travel to the airport via stops at Dejvice and Veleslavín in Prague 6. The tracks will split at Prague-Ruzyně, with one set heading toward the airport and the other taking passengers to the nearby city of Kladno. Construction is expected to start in 2018.

“Now we can start to fully prepare the project for all route segments,” Transport Minister Dan Ťok said. “While I understand the concerns of Prague 6 and want to address them, we must also protect the economic efficiency of the project, otherwise it cannot be financed with European funds.” Ťok wants to the largest part of the project to get underway during the 2014-2020 EU funding period.

The rail connection is based on a feasibility study carried out by the Railway Infrastructure Administration (SŽDC). It calls for a full double track between Masarykovo nádraží and the airport. The city’s existing rail network will also undergo a significant
upgrade.
