After tourism, one of the biggest hits to the local economy in Croatia has been the halt in fish exporters by Dalmatian suppliers. They do more than €50m in business with Italy each year, exporting fresh and frozen products. In the Split region, more than 60 companies employ neraly 1,000 people in the business through fisheries and the processing sector. Production in mariculture in Split-Dalmatia County amounted to 1,337 tons. Postirska Sardina produces 1,200 tonnes of white fish and tuna annually in its farms and processes 40 million cans. More than 70 percent of its production is exported. Most deliveries out of country have been reduced or cancelled, often because of the suspension of ferry service to Italy. This was utilized by up to 70 trucks per week. That service is set to restart April 26, bringing hope of a revival of the fish trade with Italy.
