The Railway Administration announced today a tender for the reconstruction of the station building in Pardubice. The estimated price of the contract is almost CZK 855 million. Work is likely to start in the middle of next year, it was announced..
The contract is being tendered by the Railway Administration (SŽ) for the check-in hall and also for the east and west wings of the building. The builders will focus on the restoration of the building structures, facade, roof and the entire interior. They will also pay special attention to the modernisation of the passenger areas.
The repaired part of the interior will be returned to its original historical appearance, but with respect to current requirements. The original building, designed by architects Karel Řepa, Karel Kalvoda and Josef Danda, began operating in May 1958 and is regarded by conservationists as the finest functionalist railway station with a hotel in post-war Czechoslovakia.
The reconstruction of the building was divided into two stages precisely because of the monument protection and the size of the whole complex. “We are keeping our promise and are launching a competition for the main part of the reconstruction of Pardubice railway station. If everything goes smoothly, we can start the work in the middle of next year and hand over the renovated station to the public in 2026,” said Jiří Svoboda, Director General of SŽ.
The second stage includes the reconstruction of the station hall, the eastern operational wing and the western wing with an apartment building. The central communication area of the station concourse with related services for passengers will be preserved. Builders will expand the retail units, relocate the waiting areas for mothers with children, and modify the public restrooms.
The east wing will be used to support rail operations. The repairs include layout changes to staff facilities and expansion of office space. An elevator will provide wheelchair access. Technology rooms will be retained on the ground floor of the west wing. Commercial space with consulting rooms and a pharmacy will be on the ground floor and first floor. A comprehensive reconstruction of the residential part is also planned.
The estimated value of the contract is CZK 855 million. The construction work will probably take 30 months. During the first year, the construction company will modernise the eastern wing and half of the hall, and in the following year work will be carried out on the western wing and the other part of the hall. The apartment building is to be done last. “During the construction, the passengers will have access to alternative premises with the necessary facilities,” said SŽ spokesman Dušan Gavenda.
In September, the Railway Administration already completed the renovation of the hotel, which cost CZK 574 million. The state organisation has an educational and economic centre there. At the same time, it continues to complete the modernisation of the railway junction, which started in September 2020.
