A total of 52,206 new homes were built in Romania in 2016, 5,222 more than the previous year, according to the National Institute of Statistics. Homes built in urban areas increased 53.4 percent y-o-y, but fell 46.6 percent in rural areas. The number of houses built by private funds also increased last year, while the number of houses built by public funds decreased. Meanwhile, the number of institutional buildings, including schools, kindergartens and hospitals, increased by 1.1 percent in 2016, according to the data.
