Over the past 14 years, Romania has spent nearly RON 75bn on the construction and repair of roads, an amount that works out to roughly €19.6bn. Of that amount, nearly half was spent in just the last three years. Motorway construction has grabbed a great deal of attention, given how badly the country needs improved transport links to help the economy grow, but the cost is high. One kilometer of motorway between Constant and Medgidia was found to cost the state between €3.6m and €5m. At the moment, Romania has just 350 km of motorways.
