Romania’s image as tourist destination worse than in 1989

16 March 2012

The image of Romanian tourism abroad is worse than before 1990, according to the country’s National Association of Travel Agencies. This, at least, is its explanation for the low number of tourists now coming to the seaside in recent years compared to the crowds that once flooded the beaches 20 years ago.
According to the association, tens of thousands of foreign tourists now come to the seaside every year, a far cry compared to the hundreds of thousands that regularly came to Black Sea resorts before 1989.
It seems likely, however, that the freedom of former East Bloc citizens to travel all over the world since 1989 is an important contributing factor to Romania’s demise.
