Romania is considering working with Chinese companies on a major infrastructure project to connect Bucharest with Iasi and Chisinau with high-speed rail. The Romanian news agency ActMedia reports that prime minister Victor Ponta said high-level talks with Chinese government officials revealed their interest in building similar high-speed lines across Central and Eastern Europe. Ponta, who is visiting China, said the proposed line could not connect the Romanian capital to Constanta because this route is part of an official European corridor, and the EC would object to the plans. Ponta also said that reaching speeds of 350 km/h, which the Chinese government is pushing for, would not be necessary because of the relatively small size of Romania. Romania is currently negotiating with Chinese companies for the construction of two nuclear power blocks at the Cernavoda power plant.
