Romanian government to go ahead with privatizations

18 May 2012

The new Romanian government may have caught a wave of public dicontent over the policies of the previous government, but it’s going right along with some of its policies. One of the most significant statements came yesterday, when it said it would go ahead with the privatization, at least in part, of state-owned power copmanies. This will include the sale of a 10 percent share of Transgaz, a pipeline operator. Subsequent sell-offs are also envisioned for companies like Nuclearelectrica, Hidroelectrica and Romgaz in the latter part of the year. The sales are part of an aggressive liberalization process being spearheaded in order to secure IMF loans to help support the country’s fiscal position.
