Romanian tourism revenues decreased by 16 percent over the past four years, to €1.5bn in 2011, mainly because of declining number of foreign tourists.
Visitors from abroad spent €750m in Romania in 2008, while last year the figure dropped to €600m, according to research conducted by PwC Romania. During this period Romanians tourists spending fell from €1.01bn to €900m. The study shows that the tourism industry in Romania contributed 1.4 percent to the nation’s GDP.
This is low in comparison to other countries in the region: Bulgaria’s tourism sector provided 3.6 percent of the nation’s output, Hungary’s 4 percent and 2.8 percent of the Czech Republic’s GDP came via foreign visitors.
