Russia plans construction of motorway to Crimea

11 May 2020

Russia is planning to build a $1.5bn highway motorway to Crimea, in order to cut journey times and develop tourism on the peninsula it annexed from Ukraine in 2014. There are currently two roads leading from Krasnodar to Crimea, and officials predict the construction of a new highway would help relieve congestion on routes passing through other towns.

The project is part of a series of investments to create infrastructure connections to Crimea , spending on which has reached $7.7bn. Of that total, $3.48bn was allocated to the Kerch Strait bridge and $2.53bn was allocated to the 250-km Tavrida highway, which extends from the from the bridge to the peninsula itself.
