S. Bohemian wants a complex with apartments and social services instead of part of the hospital

8 September 2022

The South Bohemian Region is preparing a new use of the complex of buildings in the lower area of the České Budějovice Hospital. In its place, there should be facilities providing various social services and also apartments.

This will create a completely new location, which, among other things, will offer 170 beds for social services and 150 new apartments. The departments that now remain in operation in the lower area of the hospital will be moved to the upper area, according to South Bohemian Governor Martin Kuba (ODS).

“The entire České Budějovice agglomeration has long been affected by the problem of lack of beds in homes for the elderly. The waiting times for them are very long. And we lack facilities for neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s disease or Alzheimer’s disease,” he said. Project cost estimates so far range from CZK 1.5 to CZK 1.7 billion. However, according to the governor, the amount may change depending on the situation on the construction market.

Construction work is scheduled to begin in 2024 and last two years. According to Kuba, the new apartments should mainly serve as municipal or regional rentals. Hejtman added that they will be intended, for example, for doctors or teachers. “These are professions where we encounter a shortage of personnel on the labor market. And if we want to get new doctors and new teachers here, we cannot offer them housing in hostels,” he said.

According to Kuba, an interesting background will also be created in an attractive location. “We are talking about a place that is located near the historical center of České Budějovice. The project also includes a sufficient area of greenery,” said the South Bohemian governor.

The lower campus of the České Budějovice Hospital used to function as a military hospital. Now some departments, such as orthopedics or ENT, still operate in it. However, they will gradually move to the upper area of the hospital, which is located a few hundred meters further. “The whole project is part of the modernization of the hospital, which we have been working on for several years,” said the director of the České Budějovice hospital, Michal Šnorek.
