The developer YIT has awarded first place in its architectural/urbanism competition for the transformation of a brownfield site in Bratislava to Sadovsky&Architects. In justifying its unanimous decision, the jury wrote that the design created a high-quality environment with its own identity while maximizing the implementation of sustainable development concepts. YIT’s project will replace an old factory in the Mlynske nivy district. The jury praised the central park area that runs down the middle of two rows of apartment buildings, saying the abundance of trees there will help cool the area during hot summer months and help with the retention of rain water. It said the design was an elegant compromise between housing estate urban planning and classic city block layouts. A total of 11 studios took part in the competition from Slovakia and the Czech Republic. Second place went to the What architects studio.
