Following a meeting with the Czech president, the chairman of the country’s supreme court Pavel Šamal said that the state should compensate clients of the failed residential developer H-System for the loss of their investment. Hundreds of people lost their life’s savings after paying the developer before construction even began. At the same time, Šamal apologized for the court cases surrounding the case, admitting that the fact they took 20 years to complete illustrated the incompetence of the Czech state in the 1990’s. He added that the slow pace of Czech courts is also evident in the corruption case of former Central Bohemian governor David Rath. Rath was accused of accepting bribes over the reconstruction of buildings in the region after being found with CZK 7m in cash in his car (he claims he thought the boxes contained wine).
