The Slovak online news portal Aktuality.sk visited the Samsung television factory in the town of Galant to track down rumors that the company might be shutting down production for good. It arrived to find the parking lot empty and found out that workers had been given the day off. Sources told the journalists that Samsung often had slow periods during the spring and summer, but that this year the trend has increased. Galant’s mayor Peter Paska said the company was shifting some of its production to Hungary but denied that there were plans to shut down the plant entirely. However, he confirmed that some of Samsung’s local suppliers were slowing production, with those unable to find other clients to fill the gap deciding to shutter their doors. Samsung Electronics Slovakia’s revenues peaked in 2012 at €3.6bn but fell to just €1.8bn in 2018. Mayor Paska said that with unemployment at just 2 percent, anyone looking for work is still able to find it.
