In reaction to the worsening labor shortage, a Slovak association of business owners called Klub 500 is pushing the government to allow companies to build standard rental flats for its employees and their families. But Slovak Ministry of Transportation and Construction has refused to consider enabling companies to build anything other than dormitories. Klub 500 claims that even the conditions proposed for the construction of such dorms are likely to prevent companies from doing even that. The pressure group says that the availability of rental flats would help improve labor mobility, something which would help companies in their current difficulties in finding new employees.
State support through loans is currently to be offered only to employers for the construction of rental units on the condition that the units be leased to employees on a sublet basis. Klub 500 says these companies (including Volkswagen SK) would prefer to let private investors build the flats themselves, rather than involving themselves in non-core business activities.
