Slovakia has won its request for a non-returnable contribution from European cohesion funds for the completion of the Žilina bypass, meaning that 85 percent of the work will be subsidized by the EU under the operational fund Transportation 2007 – 2013. The new section of the D3 motorway has been under construction since 2014 and is due for completion in 2017. The road is expected to relieve congestion from the center of the city and facilitate quicker access for transit traffic heading north to Poland.
“The northwest bypass of Žilina will save motorists tens of minutes as they won’t have to sit in back-up or at intersections in the center of town,” said transport minister Roman Brecely. He pointed out that to date, Slovakia still has no motorway connection to its larger northern neighbor. Eurovia SK, Hochtief CZ and Stavby mostov Slovakia are building the new road at a price agreed in 2014 at €254.9m
