Small stores allowed to open in Austria

14 April 2020

The opening of small stores on Tuesday in Austria was the first step in gradually re-starting the economy. “We are on track.” That was the message today from Chancellor Sebastian Kurz, who added that a schedule for allowing sporting and cultural events to be held would be announced on Wednesday. After the initial opening of small shops on Tuesday, authorities hope to be able to allow shopping centers as well as beauty salons open by May. At the moment, the government is not planning to let restaurants and hotels open for business until mid-May at the earliest and no decision is expected on the matter before the end of April. The spread of COVID-19 has been halted, so that the number of people recovering from the disease each day is larger than the number of new infections.
