Soros university may relocate to Prague from Budapest

6 April 2017

Czech Finance Minister Andrej Babiš has suggested that George Sorose’s Central European University (CEU) could relocate to Prague from Budapest. The Hungarian Parliament recently approved a new and stricter version of a law regarding foreign universities, which could force CEU out of Hungary. Babiš has proposed offering the historic Invalidovna complex in Prague 8 to the university as its future seat. He argues that the baroque complex has been vacant for some time, and is in need of a thorough reconstruction. The Czech state made a few unsuccessful attempts to sell it. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán is leading the political campaign against CEU in Hungary, accusing it of fraud. The founder of the university, US-based Hungarian George Soros, is considered to be Orbán’s political opponent.
