South Bohemia sees flats being built in apartment buildings increased three times last year

16 February 2022

In the South Bohemian Region, construction of 2,877 flats began last year, almost 400 more than in the previous year. The number of flats that started to be built in new apartment buildings increased almost threefold year-on-year, mainly in the České Budějovice and Český Krumlov regions. The builders in the region completed 1,734 flats last year, 65 more than the year before. This follows from data published by the Czech Statistical Office (ČSÚ).

The region accounted for less than seven percent of the nationwide number of dwellings under construction. Almost half of the flats that began to be built in the region were in new family houses. Last year, the construction of 1,136 flats began in new apartment buildings, 846 more than the previous year. The massive construction of these flats was recorded by statisticians especially in the České Budějovice and Český Krumlov regions, when over 500 of these flats began to be built in each of the named districts.

In the Český Krumlov region, the number of all flats that began to be built almost doubled compared to 2020. “More than two thirds of it was the construction of apartment buildings. However, the question is whether the apartments will be intended for permanent housing, or rather they are buildings in recreational areas,” said Irena Votrubová from the ČSÚ regional administration in České Budějovice.

The flats are being built, for example, in the former Jitony complex in Český Krumlov. The development company SVV real is building a residential complex called Krumlovský vltavín there. It will include 11 apartment buildings with almost 200 apartments. The first phase should end in the autumn of 2023. Over 60 percent of all flats in the region began to be built in the districts of České Budějovice and Český Krumlov last year. Last year, the district of Písek contributed the least to three percent of construction in the region, where, according to the ČSÚ, housing construction has been in decline for a long time.

The builders in the region completed 1,734 flats last year. Of these, almost three quarters were in new family homes. Year-on-year, the number of dwellings completed in new apartment buildings increased by almost a third, 445 dwellings.

Last year, 45,244 flats began to be built in the Czech Republic, 28.3 percent more than in the previous year. However, according to statistics, the year-on-year comparison is affected by the slowdown caused by the coronavirus pandemic in 2020.
