Spanish tile producers operating at just 75% capacity

16 April 2020

Spain’s construction sector is getting back to work, which is good news for the 15,000 employees that can now return to their projects. But the process of ramping up business again after a month of not applying for any public works projects could be complicated, as all tenders were suspended. The construction materials sector has had to withstand similar disruptions, meaning that tile production will be slow to come back on line. Roughly 90 percent of Spain’s tile production capacity is located in the province of Castellon, but so far the companies in the sector are running at just 25 percent capacity. The reason is that their primary export markets (the United States and the EU countries) have halted imports as they confront the COVID-19 pandemic.
