St. Anne’s Hospital in Brno for CZK 966 million Hospital will modernize its energy systems

17 October 2023

St. Anne’s University Hospital in Brno is planning to modernise its energy systems at a cost of more than CZK 966 million. The basis of the project is a new gas-fired steam boiler room, which will be provided by the association of Amper Savings and Enetiqa. The minimum guaranteed savings in heat, electricity and water are more than one-third, hospital spokesman Jiří Erlebach said in a press release today. The facility will pay about CZK 200 million in energy costs this year.

The work will start in the new year and last 18 months. “The modernisation concerns a number of very outdated technologies that are at the end of their useful life. The work will be done while the hospital is fully operational. The choice of a consortium of contractors who have extensive experience with similar large-scale projects is a promise that the work will not limit the scope of patient care provided. The saved energy costs will allow us to invest in further improvement of the quality of medical care and patient comfort in the future,” said Vlastimil Vajdák, the hospital director.

The modernisation concerns three areas and 20 buildings. It includes construction measures that will improve the thermal-technical properties of selected buildings, construction of a new steam boiler room, modernisation of power sources and installation of new heat and steam distribution systems. Workers will install new heat exchanger stations in all buildings. New air-handling units will make it possible to use waste heat from the upgraded cooling system. Savings will also be made by 10,000 energy-saving LED luminaires, which will replace older-style luminaires. Partial energy self-sufficiency will be ensured by the installation of two local photovoltaic power plants.

The cost amounts to CZK 966.4 million, of which CZK 540 million excluding tax will be covered by a subsidy from the State Environmental Fund. The rest will be paid by the hospital from the savings it will receive from the modernisation. Ten years after the completion of the work, the hospital should save over CZK 500 million in energy and sewage fees. “As contractors, we guarantee a minimum reduction of 30 percent in energy consumption and the corresponding energy costs. The final financial savings will be even slightly higher, as energy and sewerage prices are likely to continue to rise over the next ten years,” said Jörg Lüdorf, Chairman of the Board of Directors of ENETIQA. The modernisation will also ensure that greenhouse gas emissions will be reduced by at least 33 percent compared to today.

The project is being done using the guaranteed result method, the so-called EPC. EPC projects involve the design of energy-saving measures, the preparation, implementation and, where appropriate, the negotiation of project financing. Amper Savings, as the leader of the consortium, is covering the contract and will also provide the subsequent ten-year energy management. “This is the largest EPC project in the Czech Republic with regard to the scope of technological measures, the scale and complexity of energy saving solutions,” said Radek Vrána, CEO of Amper Savings. The company has completed EPC projects in hospitals in Břeclav and Hustopeče or in Gumotex in Břeclav.
