Stricter controls spark 17 km back-ups at Czech borders

The Czech Republic’s border crossings have become the biggest bottlenecks anywhere in Europe, according to the daily Lidove noviny. Lines of up to 17 km formed on Wednesday at Petrovice along the D8 and at Rozvadov on the D5. “The situation is desperate,” said ČSAD Logistik Ostrava’s Miroslav Konečný. “We’re waiting 4 to 8 hours at the border. That has serious economic consequences for us, transport is stuck and there are huge delays.” The government recently implemented stricter controls and data collection for drivers, which slowing down the process of crossing the border. Police are checking to make sure Czech drivers are returning in less than 14 days, in which case they would have to be quarantined for two weeks. Logistics companies are delivering goods for the prices originally agreed, even though it’s taking far longer to complete deliveries than expected, and they’re often being penalized for arriving late. There appears to be no move as of yet by the government to establish Green Lanes as other countries are doing to speed the movement of goods.
