The construction market almost looks as if it’s recovering, according to figures released for January indicating one of the highest increases in the volume of construction in the European Union. The sector rose around 15 percent compared to January 2011, and was bettered only by Poland, which saw an increase of more than 30 percent.
Razvan Niculescu Aron, senior vice president of the Construction Employers Society said that, while gratifying, January figures do not describe a trend yet. On the other hand, if the state would invest in social housing and would prioritize major investment works, construction could be one of the engines of the economy, he added.
In January, the volume of construction work increased by 40 percent in non-residential buildings and by 18.3 percent in construction engineering. With residential buildings, a fall of 22.4 percent was registered. Corin Romanescu (UNPR) came in second.
