Student housing rents growing in Portugal

Lisbon’s student rental market has grown in recent years, with supply now exceeding 10,000 rooms and 3,000 home owners. According to statistics from the Directorate General for Education and Science, the number of foreign students in Portugal has been growing. Between 2009-2010 to 2013-2014, the number of non-national students enrolled in university education increased from 19,425 to almost 34,000, an increase of 74 percent. The growing number of foreign students enrolled in Portugal has taken place mainly in the public sector where the increase in the past five years, producing growth of 86.6 percent. Student rents for Portuguese students, most of whom come from inland location, have also been rising, more quickly than those in the rest of Lisbon.
