Tenants pushing for the government to prevent landlords terminating existing contracts

8 December 2020

Mall Tenants Interest Protection Association (BBEE) wants the government to prevent landlords from terminating existing contracts and reducing rents by 50% during state of emergency and give tax cuts on sales and wage subsidies. BBEE makes 5 points for the government to save retail and catering businesses and employees:

· Government reduces sales tax for companies in the clothing, footwear, and other affected sectors that have their mall locations for at least 18 months from January 1, 2021.
· Government support wage costs by providing 50 percent of gross wages and wage burdens to businesses in the form of subsidies.
· 50 percent reduction in rents from September 1, 2020 to May 1, 2021.
· Association initiates the forint conversion of rents denominated in euros from 1 March 2020 to 1 July 2022, so that it is based on the average of the forint-euro exchange rate of the last two years.
· Association initiates a moratorium on fee increases and cancellations until January 1, 2024, and prevented withdrawal of rental guarantees by the end of the second month following the end of the emergency.
