The Slovak water building authority has launched a tender to repair the floodgates at Gabčíkovo dam. The refurbishment is expected to cost €100m and should be completed in four years. Traffic on the Gabčíkovo dam will be reduced during this period. The state also wants to repair the dam’s power generating turbines.
The state took over operations of the water power plant from Slovenske elektrarne in March, arguing that the lease between the water building authority and Slovenské elektrarne is not valid. Slovenske elektrarne has filed a lawsuit in Vienna and is demanding compensation of €588m from the Slovak state.
