The closed post office in Třebíč could become a café

The closed branch of the Czech Post in Okružní Street in Třebíč could become a café. The Trebic town hall, which owns the building, has approved its long-term lease. In addition to the café, the 130-square-metre ground-floor space could serve as a venue for discussions and workshops. The town hall has not received any other serious offers for the use of the building, which was a post office until the end of last June. Třebíč mayor Pavel Pacal (Pro Třebíč) announced today.

“It seems to us to be a sensible use of the space, the locality definitely needs something similar,” Pacal said. According to him, the building will have to be significantly modified before the café can be opened, and new water and sewage systems will have to be installed. Some of the work will be paid for by the city, others by the tenant, which is why the building will be leased for 20 years. The annual rent is set at CZK 60,000.

In Trebic, with about 35,000 inhabitants, there were four post offices until the middle of last year, but two remain. Neither of them is wheelchair accessible and there is no parking at the main post office. The decision to keep the branches was made because they are busier. According to data provided by the Czech Post, the least busy branch in Okružní Street was visited by over 200 people a day, while the main post office handled almost 900 people a day. Due to poor economic results, the Czech Post has closed three hundred branches in the Czech Republic since last July, leaving 2,900.
