The Pardubice region and some cities in the region are trying to collect their debts from Sberbank CZ, which has filed for bankruptcy. For example, Chrudim had approximately CZK 26 million deposited with Sberbank CZ However, the journey to them will now be difficult, announced Chrudim mayor František Pilný (ANO).

“Since the filing of the insolvency petition, it is not possible to carry out offsets. We were prepared to try to come to an agreement with another municipality that had a loan there, that we would mutually offset it against our claim and the municipality would then compensate us. Now this is no longer possible and this road is a dead end,” said Pilný.

The Svitavys also have part of the money deposited in their accounts with the bank, they cannot now dispose of CZK 72 million, they have registered the claim in insolvency proceedings. The city’s budget for next year is not yet at risk. “We had that money as savings for co-financing European projects. However, the announcement of calls is delayed, so we expect that the first projects with a European Union subsidy will start in autumn 2023 or spring 2024. We hope that when we receive the support, we will already have the money from Sberbank on the account,” said Mayor David Šimek (Association for the City of Svitavy). In the worst case, the town hall would have to take out a bridging loan for co-financing.

According to Mladá fronta Dnes, the Pardubice region has registered its claims with Sberbank CZ in the total amount of more than CZK 53 million. The region had two accounts with the bank, a current account and a savings account with a notice period. The Czech National Bank legally revoked the banking license of Sberbank CZ at the beginning of May. Other regions and municipalities also had money in Sberbank. For example, the Vysočina Region has CZK 2.4 billion left in the bank. Clients’ receivables arose mainly from deposits in accounts where the balances were above the insured limit of CZK 2.5 million.
