The refugee crisis caused by the war in Ukraine cost the Hradec Králové region to CZK 5.5 million

The Hradec Králové region has so far spent CZK 5.5 million on the refugee crisis caused by the Russian invasion of Ukraine. There is enough free capacity in the region to accommodate Ukrainian refugees, but the food bank’s reserves in the region are dwindling. This resulted from the statements of the representatives of the governor’s office. So far, more than 12,400 Ukrainians have passed through the Regional Assistance Center for Assistance to Ukraine (KACPU) for the Hradec Králové Region, of which more than 1,900 have received accommodation through a database of firefighters. Data are as of April 13.

It has not yet been the turn of the Hradec Králové Region to activate emergency-type accommodation, such as gyms. “It will depend on how it will be accommodated in non-commercial accommodation capacities that people offer in the next period.

Most of the refugees registered in the Hradec Králové KACPU are accommodated in regional, city, municipal and other non-commercial types of accommodation, such as various hostels and real estate of non-profit organizations. According to the governor’s office, the numerous Ukrainian diaspora contributed a lot to solving the refugee problem. “That is why in the region very often people also stayed in households. 7,000 Ukrainians already lived in the Hradec Králové region before the war,” said Lechmann.

Through KACPU Hradec Králové, it has so far managed to arrange accommodation for about ten percent of all refugees arriving in the region. “The others had secured accommodation thanks to cities, municipalities and non-profit organizations,” said Lechmann.

The majority of Ukrainian refugees in the region are women and children, according to the Interior Ministry, more than 5,300 under the age of 18. In the middle of the week, about 1,900 Ukrainian pupils were educated in schools in the region, ie in kindergartens, primary and secondary schools, ie more than a third of all refugees registered in the region. The number of Ukrainian schoolchildren in school facilities in the region continues to increase, said representatives of the Governor’s Office.

One week before the spring round of the food collection, according to the Hradec Králové charity, the stocks in the warehouses of the food bank in the region are getting thinner. Therefore, it welcomes any durable food, but also dairy and other products, including drugstore goods, people do not have to wait for the collection. The spring food collection will be on Saturday, April 23.

“Now we are waiting for a nationwide collection, which should partially refill the bank. Only in Hradec Králové’s KACPU dozens of refugees receive food packages every day,” said Lechmann on last week Wednesday.

The region has so far set aside 25 million crowns for the refugee crisis. The governor’s office assumes that this will not be enough and the region will have to increase the amount.

In recent weeks, the governor’s office has registered lower daily numbers of refugees using the services of the regional assistance center. On average, Hradec Králové’s KACPU registers one hundred to 200 people a day, a month ago there were many times more.
