The hotel market in Romania added about 280 international brand rooms this year, a smaller number compared to previous years.

Mercure Cozieni, Ibis Styles Otopeni and Mercure Sibiu Arsenal are the three hotels opened this year. So, this year, Accor was the only international group that expanded its portfolio on the local market, being at the same time the largest global hotel operator on the domestic market.

Frank Reul, the development director for Eastern Europe of the French group Accor, believes that Romania has a huge potential for expansion in the hospitality sector. “It’s a paradox considering what you have to offer. You have sea, mountain, many beautiful areas in Transylvania, but also in other areas of the country. Both us, the Accor group, but also our competitors, see a huge potential in Romania, but it is a market that needs consolidation. Compared to other countries in the region, the number of hotels under international brands is small,” said Frank Reul.
