The Slovenian government allowed Uber to enter the market

11 December 2020

The Slovenian government has allowed the arrival of new technologies and modes of transport, including Uber. Uber will be available to passengers and drivers in Slovenia. The government is convinced that this will make the transport offer more diverse and the prices lower.

The amendments to the law change the implementation of taxi transport and car rental with a driver, and also propose the reduction of administrative barriers to the implementation of taxi activities. The conditions for using the electronic application for taxi transport and when renting a vehicle with a driver are the same, which ensures equal treatment of both types of transport.

Taximeters would no longer be mandatory for taxi drivers either. Since the price of transportation and the route are agreed in advance for transportation agreed through the internet platform, which gives the passenger the security of the service provider, requests for additional protection, such as a taximeter, are unnecessary, according to the Ministry of Infrastructure.

The mayor of Ljubljana, Zoran Janković, has long been in favor of Uber’s arrival in Ljubljana, believing that the city of Uber offers its electric vehicles that could be included in Uber’s park and that all cars driven by Uber’s drivers will have to be green. On the other hand, strong opposition to the arrival of Uber in Slovenia was expressed by taxi carriers and unions.
