Employers’ Union “Transport and Logistics Poland” (TLP) appealed to the minister of infrastructure to introduce sanctions against Russia and Belarus in the form of limiting transport flows from and to these countries, the organization said.
Any obstacles to the flow of goods may have a negative impact on the functioning of Russian enterprises and the entire economy. In our opinion, sanctions should also apply to Belarus. Therefore, we appealed to the minister of infrastructure to take steps to suspend the application of the Customs Convention on the International Carriage of Goods with the Use of TIR Carnets. of November 14, 1975 in relation to trade in goods with the Russian Federation and Belarus The Convention simplifies customs procedures between its parties – a total of almost 70 countries, which shortens the time of transport, reduces controls and reduces costs. […] We also called for suspension of the participation of representatives of the Russian Federation and Belarus in the work of the European Transport Committee and the temporary non-recognition by the Polish authorities of EKMT permits for road transport carried out by carriers established in the territory of the Russian Federation and Belarus. the possibility of carrying out transports by these companies to and through Poland. We hope that Poland will be followed by declarations by other European countries in this area, TLP announced.
The third of the proposed actions is to exert appropriate pressure on the International Road Transport Union (IRU) in order to suspend the membership in this organization of unions from aggressor countries in this organization. TLP reminds that the IRU was established in 1948 on the initiative of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) to accelerate the reconstruction of war-torn Europe by facilitating international trade in road transport. In its ranks there should be no place for States that attack the fundamental values of the United Nations.
“In the face of the unprecedented aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine, we cannot operate in the ‘business as usual’ model. Since transport is called the bloodstream of the economy – we see legitimacy in limiting transport flows to both Belarus and Russia – we applied to the minister of infrastructure with this request,” they further stated.
“We are aware that they [sanctions] are double-edged, as they also cause economic losses for states and problems for companies from countries using such means of influence. Nevertheless – we are convinced that if today we do not make sacrifices to stop the war, sooner or later we will pay a much higher price for it,” added President Maciej Wroński.
