Toll for driving in central Prague unavoidable

5 March 2020

The City of Prague has set a goal of reducing emissions by 45 percent within ten years. Deputy mayor Peter Hlubuček says that since 80 percent of Prague’s emissions are caused by automobile traffic, reducing car usage will be a top priority. For this and other reasons, he says the introduction of a road tax for the center of Prague is unavoidable. “It’s the most ecological thing we can do in Prague,” he told Hospodářské noviny. “In addition, it would help reduce traffic.” He said the construction of the new metro line would help reduce pollution in the city as will the expansion of the city’s tram network and the reduction of parking spots for non-residents. Prague also wants to begin installing solar voltaic cells on the roofs of publicly-owned buildings of which there are 6,000 in the Czech capital.
