UPS Healthcare will open its first healthcare logistics center in Germany

UPS Healthcare has announced that it will open its first healthcare logistics center in Giessen, Germany, in line with an ongoing expansion strategy aimed at expanding its global reach. The center is scheduled to open in early 2023 and will meet the needs of a growing and innovative market with demands for advanced temperature-controlled logistics. It will offer greater flexibility and new growth opportunities in both traditional and emerging markets, and will strengthen the corporate network in Central Europe, which also includes the recently opened UPS Helathcare logistics center in Ostrava.

“The new center will serve some of the fastest growing healthcare markets in the world,” said Wes Wheeler, president of UPS Healthcare. “By opening our first facility in Germany, we are investing in our customers whose latest pharmaceutical, biotech and medical products require a comprehensive range of quality specialized warehousing and handling services.”

In 2021, UPS Healthcare invested in more than 36,000 sqm of refrigeration chain storage and refrigeration capacity worldwide, including new and modernized healthcare logistics centers in the Czech Republic, the Netherlands, Poland and Italy. These new logistics facilities will strengthen the existing million-square-meter medical warehouses in 134 strategically located centers that meet the requirements of best distribution and production practices (GDP / GMP) in 30 countries.

On an area of ​​24,680 sqm with GMP and GDP certification, it will be possible to store more than 30,000 pallets with various medical products at temperatures from 2 to 8 ° C, from 15 to 25 ° C and up to minus 20 ° C.

The new center is strategically located in the heart of Central Europe. It offers access to the fast-growing Western and Eastern European healthcare markets and supports pharmaceutical, medical device and biological medicine manufacturers, who are increasingly demanding logistics with a timely transport and temperature control regime for their products. The global biologics market is set to grow to USD 421.8 billion by 2025 from USD 285.5 billion in 2020.

The proximity of the European UPS hub at Cologne / Bonn Airport and the European UPS Healthcare hub for medical shipments in Roermond, the Netherlands, will provide customers with shorter national and global transit times, extend production times and guarantee next day delivery and access to 80 percent of Europe. major ports including Rotterdam, Antwerp and Amsterdam. The specialized logistics complex will also supply hospitals and pharmacies throughout Germany.

The new healthcare logistics center is part of UPS Healthcare’s ongoing investment in Germany, where the company recently launched UPS Premier. It enables priority transport and tracking of critical medical shipments with an accuracy of 3 meters anywhere in the global UPS network.
