During Prime Minister Donald Tusk and President Andrzej Duda’s visit to the United States, the US announced that it plans to provide Poland with a USD 2 billion loan for the purchase of 96 Apache helicopters, the Prime Minister’s Office reported.
This was a historic visit and a serious conversation, at a serious moment. Prime Minister Donald Tusk and President Andrzej Duda met with US President Joe Biden in Washington. It was an opportunity to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Poland’s accession to NATO, but also to talk about the future. Prime Minister Donald Tusk stressed that Poland and the US share common views on security issues – including the need to support Ukraine in its fight against Russia. The US also announced that it plans to provide Poland with a USD 2 billion loan for the purchase of 96 Apache helicopters, it was announced.
The Prime Minister emphasised our country’s role in NATO. We are a leader among the Alliance countries in terms of defence spending. In 2024, we plan to spend 4.2 per cent of GDP, or around PLN 160 billion, it was indicated.
“Poland is and will continue to be a solid and enduring pillar of the transatlantic community. We take our commitments seriously, more than anyone else in Europe,” Tusk noted during his meeting with US President J. Biden.
“The main purpose of my visit was to confirm unequivocally that America will never hesitate to come to Poland’s aid if Poland is ever attacked, that Article 5 of the Washington Treaty is unassailable. I wanted to know that the Americans feel obliged, and will always be obliged, to act immediately should we need such assistance,” said the Prime Minister during a press conference after his meeting with the US President.
Article 5 indicates that an attack on one country in NATO is an attack against all countries in the Alliance. The head of the Polish government stressed that this is particularly relevant in the context of the war taking place across our eastern border.
Tusk also stressed at the press conference the importance of solidarity support for Ukraine, which is fighting for its freedom and for ours. Support in the form of armaments, humanitarian or material aid is the responsibility not only of European countries, but also of NATO.
“We discussed the extent to which it is possible to unblock American aid quickly. We also exchanged comments on how we Poles are mobilising the European Union for this aid,” said the head of the Polish government.
President Joe Biden announced American support for Ukraine fighting the Russian aggressor. He also thanked Poland for its assistance to its eastern neighbour.
The US side has announced that it will provide Poland with a loan, under the Foreign Military Financing programme, in the amount of USD 2 billion. Our country will be able to purchase 96 Apache helicopters from the United States. NATO’s eastern flank must be adequately secured, it was announced.
“There is information about a possible loan from the Americans, a favourable loan for the helicopters. This is fresh information, but we take it very seriously, “the Prime Minister stressed during the conference.
The Prime Minister announced that the Polish government would maintain cooperation with the US also in the area of nuclear energy or technological cooperation.
