The deputies of Ústí nad Labem will negotiate the purchase of land near the former rectorate and dormitories, the building is owned by the city. The plots are intended for residential construction. According to deputy mayor Věra Nechybová (nez.), the city would like to build on the land in the future and thus expand its housing stock. The offer price is approximately CZK 7 million.
The city was approached by a representative of the owner of the land with an offer to sell, so the city had an appraisal of the price prepared. The Council agreed to buy the parcels of about 3,000 square metres.
“We would like to build as a municipal investor, not to sell it to someone else,” said Mayor Petr Nedvědický (ANO). The town hall has already acquired several flats during its tenure. Recently, for example, the municipality completed the reconstruction of a residential hotel in Čelakovská Street, where 33 flats were created.
More flats are to be built in the building that formerly housed the rector’s office. In the past, the city leadership had talked about creating apartments for the elderly in the building. Alternatively, the Regional Health Authority is also interested in housing units in the town. The city bought the building in Hoření Street from the university for CZK 61 million. Nedvědický said he wants to use the loan money to turn the former dormitory into an apartment building. The space will also house social services and children’s services. The building already houses a nursing service. The complex also has gyms that would be used by young athletes.
In the immediate vicinity of the former Rector’s Office is the ruin of the Máj Hotel. It lacks a shell, windows and some staircases are missing inside. Homeless people and drug addicts are moving into the building. Its owner has complained on several occasions about systemic bias among members of the city’s leadership and officials when deciding on possible modifications to the building, such as the need for security, Nedvědický said earlier.
