Violence forces Bratislava to step up security on Obchodná

6 June 2019

Following a string of violent incidents in the center of Bratislava, the mayor has announced new measures to increase security. This includes the construction of a new police station on Obchodná street, where police recently shot a man who had been threatening people around him with a knife. City hall’s spokesman Peter Bubla said tough measures would have to be taken to regain control of the streets. “The biggest problem area in the center is definitely Obchodná street and the area around Hurbanovo square,” he said. “We realize that a constant presence from politce forces on this streets is important. That’s why in March, we extended the time on Fridays and Saturdays when patrols would be present on Obchodná street.”

The city carried out an online poll of 3,600 residents to collect opinions on the public perception of security in the city. It’s planning to crack down on establishments open at night, especially in connection with the sale and serving of alcohol, and will put pressure on them to be more responsible for their role in maintaining a peaceful atmosphere on the streets after dark. The city is currently working on planning documentation for the new police station on Obchodná street, which will replace the Green Tea shop.
