VW and Bosch bosses argue over hydrogen

17 July 2020

Volkswagen and Bosch are engaged in a bitter debate over the future of cars and the role hydrogen will play in it. Die Welt reports that Volkswagen boss Herbert Diess is unwilling to look beyond electric vehicles and has committed his company to focusing on this route. He’s come into conflict on this subject with Volkmar Denner, who leads Bosch, who refutes the notion that electric engines are the only economically viable option. Denner believes that fuel cells and synthetic fuels could play an important role in bringing down emissions in the transport sector. He believes that more efficient electrolysis procedures and more powerful, sea-based wind power turbines could bring down the cost of green hydrogen production costs. This would improve the economic viability for its use in the transport sector, especially when it comes to the transport of freight, including trucks and buses. Electricity is technically a more efficient way to power vehicles, say experts, but it’s not yet known if the batteries needed for larger vehicles will end up being too heavy to be practical.
