Volkswagen will cut around 5,000 jobs at its light commercial vehicles division in Hannover by 2029 to just 10,000. Thomas Sedran told the weekly Automobilwoche newspaper that the company’s more expensive models would continue to be produced in Germany, but that its cheaper ones would rely on VW’s plant in Września, Poland. He said the reality is it’s no longer possible to build cars in Germany that cost less than €20,000 without overpaying. VW is currently producing its Caddy, Transporter and Crafter models in Poland as well as some electric cars for a total output of 270,000 vehicles annually. Sedran claims the works council had approve VW’s plans after understanding the economic realities of the situation. The ID Buzz model, a fully-electric vehicles, will continue to be produced in Hannover as will the company’s more expensive vans.
