Wage growth in Czechia faster than all its neighbors over last decade

23 November 2020

Wages in the Czech Republic grew 51 percent over the last ten years, which is nearly twice as fast as they rose in Germany. In fact, none of the country’s neighbors come particularly close. Whereas the average German is now making 26.5 percent more than he was a decade ago, the average Slovak’s pay slip rose just 26.5 percent. The figures were released by the Purpose Trading brokerage house. Poles now take home 34 percent more than they did in 2010, according to the company’s study, while Austrians improved by 36.9 percent. In nominal terms, of course, Czechs are nowhere near their German-speaking neighbors. The average wage in German is CZK 106,436 per month, while Austrians aren’t far behind, at CZK 100,321. But in comparison with its former Eastern Bloc neighbors, Czechs can still claim first place thanks to an average wage of CZK 34,271. Slovaks earn an average of CZK 27,025 per month, while Poles are on CZK 29,591. Czech inflation is the highest in Central Europe: 2.9 percent.
