Water consumption in Poland was 8.4 km3 in 2020, which accounted for 95% of the consumption value recorded last year, the Central Statistical Office (GUS) reported.

Similarly to the previous years, industry 71% (5.9 km3) had the largest share in water consumption for the needs of the national economy and population. Water consumption in fisheries accounted for 10% (0.8 km³) of the total water consumption for the national economy. Water consumption by the municipal sector as part of the operation of the water supply network was 1.6 km3 (19%). In 2020, the consumption of water from the water supply network in households was similar to the previous year and amounted to 1.3 km3, according to the report.

The largest share in water abstraction (approx. 68%) was for production purposes (5.9 km³, compared to 6.3 km³ in 2019). Water intake for filling and replenishing fish ponds decreased by approx. 5% and amounted to 0.8 km3. On the other hand, water abstraction for the operation of the water supply network decreased by over 8% compared to 2019 and amounted to approx. 2 km3.

Surface water abstraction amounted to 6.9 km3 in 2020 and covered 80% of the needs. Surface waters were used mainly for production purposes in industry. Groundwater abstraction amounted to 1.7 km3 and was lower than the intake in 2019 by approx. 0.1 km3.

In 2020, the amount of produced industrial and municipal wastewater requiring treatment was at a similar level as in the previous year and amounted to 2.2 km3, while the amount of untreated wastewater 0.1 km3. , 16 km3, which constitutes 55.9% of treated sewage, while the amount of mechanically treated sewage amounted to 0.46 km3 (22.3% of sewage subjected to treatment processes), reported the Central Statistical Office.
