6 November 2014

The construction company Doprastav started boring a tunnel along the D1 motorway outside the city of Žilina. The two-way tunnel, to be called Žilina, will be 687 meters long and will be part of the motorway section between Hričovské Podhradie and Lietavská Lúčka. The tunnel should be completed by the end of 2015, the beginning of 2016. The whole section of the motorway should be completed by the beginning of 2018. Costs are estimated to run to €427m, with €376m to be tapped from EU funds. Doprastav, Strabag, Váhostav-SK and Metrostav are partnering on the project. Doprastav’s director, Juraj Androvič, said that the tunnel is not long, but boring will be complicated due to clay sub-soil.
