According to the head of The Romanian Medical Specialists College, Dr. Vasile Astarastoae, 11.200 medical doctors have left the country over the past 5 years.
Between 2007-2012, 8,600 specialists were trained from medical schools, and at the same time have left Romania 11,200 doctors. Thus, Romania has lost about three billion lei only with those specialists’ education, add Astarastoae.
He also says there are hospitals in the country where no specialist on a certain domain works anymore and this is a unique phenomenon in Europe.
The reasons behind medical specialists’ departure are the treatment the medical experts are receiving in the country, the lack of respect for the profession, low wages and excessive politicization of the medical sector, fear of malpractice suits, lack of equipment and treatment.
