Zlín scientists are developing a new generation of paints for structures or facades

Researchers from the Center for Polymer Systems (CPS) at Tomas Bata University in Zlín are working on the development of nanotechnologies, working on research into new pigments for anti-corrosion coating systems. These should protect, for example, metal structures or also railway, road and construction elements, according to Petra Svěráková, a spokeswoman for the university.

“We are developing a new generation of paints that will allow the application of a smaller coating thickness. This leads to less material consumption, easier use and longer protection life. The resulting product is then more competitive and at the same time more environmentally friendly,” said Ivo Kuřitka, research guarantor. groups Nanomaterials and advanced technologies from CPS.

The researchers are working on the project with Rokospol, which has a research, production and logistics center in the Zlín region. “We are pleased that we are doing things that not only we at the university think have any meaning, but that we are meeting the real demand from industrial practice and the need for the market,” said Kuřitka.

In response to rising energy prices and the search for savings, the development of coating systems for facades and roofs to reflect heat while maintaining the required color is also beginning. In summer, some interiors overheat and air conditioning is needed. “In contrast to shading components such as external sunblinds requiring installation, this solution provides an extremely easy way to apply the entire façade surface. This coating system will not only be more efficient but also much more economical. On the other hand, both solutions can also be combined to achieve an even stronger effect, “said Dušan Navrátil, Director of Development at Rokospol.

According to scientists, the research and development phase of projects is relatively fast, and subsequent testing and verification of product properties will take a lot of time. Of all the common ideas, the closest to implementation is a project focused on anti-corrosion coatings, which will be completed next May. “The launch of a new generation of paints on the market can therefore be expected in about two to three years,” said Svěráková.

“We really appreciate working with local companies. If we want products with high added value and good jobs to be created in the region, an effective transfer of know-how and at the same time the best possible preparation of university graduates for the transition to positions in industrial companies is necessary, “added Kuřitka.
