Due to the lockdown across the country and the closure of stores, two out of three retailers in the Netherlands are behind on rent payments. The government issued guidance for landlords in reaction to widespread economic distress in which it called for the partial suspension of lease payments for the months of April, May and June. It also said that evictions should be suspended to stores that were unable to pay rent because of the COVID-19 crisis. However, the agreements are non-binding and leave the door open for property owners and traders to come to agreements on their own.
